Truck Leaks Fuel Onto 128 After Accident, 1 Injured

One man was injured in a two-car accident on Route 128 Thursday morning that resulted in a fuel spill covering about 100 yards of highway.

State Police told Wakefield Patch that a caller reported the accident at about 4:20 a.m. and that it involved a 2002 International 8100 10-wheel tractor truck out of Maine operated by a 62-year-old Lewiston, Maine man. The other vehicle was a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 29 year old Peabody man, who was transported to Lahey Clinic with non life-threatening injuries.

The Wakefield Fire Department was also at the scene to help deal with the fuel leak from the truck, which eventually affected about 100 yards on the right and passing lanes close to Exit 42. Fuel remaining inside of the truck was pumped into a new tank, and its contents were unloaded so the vehicle could be removed with a heavy-duty tow.

Mass. Highway arrived to sand the area affected by the fuel spill, and the state police reported that all highway lanes were back open at 6:08 a.m.

Interestingly, this was the second time in as many days that a truck was in an accident with a fuel leak on Route 128 in this general vicinity. This item that ran yesterday on Lynnfield Patch has some photos and info from that one-vehicle accident.
