On Friday, a Boston Globe article noted that Shaw's supermarkets, which has a location in Wakefield, is struggling against low-priced competition. So what about you? Do you shop at Shaw's or somewhere else in the area?
On Friday, a Boston Globe article noted that Shaws Supermarkets have been having a hard time keeping up with lower-priced competitors such as Market Basket and Stop & Shop.
The article noted that the supermarket chain has seen its New England market share fall from 19 to 11% in New England since 2006, while also seeing a $1.5 billion sales decline in that period. The company was reportedly started in 1860 but things apparently started heading south with a series of corporate acquisitions starting in the late 1980s. In the Globe article, customer satisfaction and high prices were cited as leading factors for Shaw's.
The supermarket chain has one location in Wakefield, on Water Street, near downtown. For many Wakefield residents, it's an easy and quick drive. But we all know how full those Market Basket parking lots always seem to be when looking another 15 minutes down the highway.
So with that, Wakefielders - where are you getting your groceries these days? Do you go to Shaw's in Wakefield, do you drive down the highway to Market Basket or Stop & Shop, or is there some other nearby place you prefer?
