Wakefield's 'Most Dangerous' Intersection Is Not Where You'd Expect
The much-hated three-way meetup of Vernon, Salem and Lawrence Street is not the most dangerous in town, according to police, although most Wakefield residents think it is.
The intersection of Vernon Street, Salem Street and Lawrence Street received the most votes for "Most Dangerous Intersesction" in Wakefield, but according to statistics from the Wakefield Police Department, it's not the place where the most accidents occur in town.
"I'd say the number one worst intersection has to be Vernon and Salem St.," said John Bengston. "Despite its poor layout, I can't believe that there hasn't been a serious accident there yet."
A close second runner up in our poll was the five-way stop at the Greenwood intersection of Green Street, Greenwood Avenue and Oak Street.
"No one knows what "stop" means!" wrote Susan Watts on our Facebook page.
Despite all the hype for Vernon/Salem/Lawrence, the intersection in town with the most accidents is the corner of Main Street and Richardson Street, which had five accidents in the last 12 months, according to the Wakefield Police Department.
The second-most accident prone intersection is North Avenue and Prospect Street, which had four accidents in the last year.
Tied at three each in the last 12 months were Farm Street and Nahant Street, and Lowell and Main Street.
Every other intersection had two or less accidents in the last year, said police, including the scary three-way meetup of Vernon, Salem and Lawrence Streets.
The much-hated 5-way stop in Greenwood had no reported accidents in the last 12 months.
