The following information was supplied by the Wakefield Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Featured item: A Wakefield woman became unstable over a living situation and killed her dog, according to the Wakefield Police Department.

Police officers were dispatched to Nahant Street around 9 p.m. on April 29th to locate a woman who was reportedly unstable. Police said the woman had been staying at a residence on Nahant Street, but had been asked by the residents that day to leave. The woman became angry and unstable over the eviction, police said, noting that the woman said if she had to move out, she wouldn't have a place for her dog.

The other residents of the home told police they watched the woman walk outside with her dog, which was a 10-year-old labrador. When she returned, she did not have the dog. The residents said they ran outside and found the dog had been partially buried in a shallow grave outside in the back yard. Police determined the dog had been killed with a blow to the head with a shovel.

The woman then left the residence. Police located her walking along Nahant Street with an open container of alcohol. She was transported to Melrose-Wakfield Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Pending her evaulation, she will be summonsed to Malden District Court for animal cruelty, killing an animal, and an open container violation.
