Photos: School Committee and Board of Selectmen Candidates Debate the Issues

Candidates for School Board and Board of Selectmen debated at the Galvin Middle School on Monday night. The debate was produced by Wakefield Community Access Television and can be viewed on the WCAT Government channel.

Panelists Mark Sardella of the Wakefield Daily Item, Sara Jacobi of Wakefield Patch, and Bob Charlton of the Daily Times Chronicle, posed questions to the candidates. Credit Paul Mozell
Gregory Powers, School Committee candidate, treasurer of the 4th of July fireworks display and member of the Galvin School Council, said that as a School Committee member he would "work for all the citizens of Wakefield." "I will look at all sides of the issue and vote for what is right and responsible to do," he said. "I will make you proud. The issues we have today are temporary, but the education we provide our children will last a lifetime." Credit Paul Mozell
Ann Danehy, School Committee candidate, has served on the Finance Committee for the last five years, which she said gives her the important benefit of understanding the budget process. "Since I came on the Finance Committee, every year we’ve had level-funded budgets, which means cuts in all town departments," she said. "Now, more than ever, we need not just an experienced leader, and not just a committed leader, but leaders who are innovative, and think outside of the box as to how can we deliver education in new ways in light of the fiscal crisis." Chris Callanan, School Committee candidate, has served on the school committee for the last six years. "I would like to keep consistency as we move forward," he said. "I am also very involved in the community, I've served on many committees, and I really care about Wakefield, my hometown... All my children have attended Wakefield public schools, one has graduated, one is graduating this year and one will enter high school next year... I am a local business owner and taxpayer, and I bring experience, dedication and consistency." Credit Paul Mozell
Selectman Betsy Sheeran has served on the Board of Selectmen for the past six years. "In each of these six years, we presented a balanced budget, supported the recommendations of the town administrator and his department heads, and worked diligently to ensure that taxpayers would see the services that each member of the community deserves," she said. "In order to maintain services, efficiencies, coupled with creativity, collaboration, and long-range planning must continue to ensure the overall quality of life in Wakefield." Credit Paul Mozell

On Monday night, the three candidates for the Board of Selectmen and the three candidates for the School Committee participated in a debate produced by Wakefield Community Access Television at the Galvin Middle School.

In the School Committee race, incumbent Chris Callanan is challenged by Anne Danehy and Gregory Powers for two open positions.

In the Board of Selectmen's race, incumbents Betsy Sheeran and Patrick Glynn are challenged by Richard Wood for two open positions.
