Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 25

It's an early release day in Wakefield, it's No Name Calling Day in Massachusetts, and more things to know today.

1. Sunny and cooler -  According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high near 40 degrees.

2. Today in Wakefield Sports - Boys and girls varsity indoor track compete at the ML12 Individual Championship meet at 5 p.m., girls varsity ice hockey plays Lexington at 7:10 p.m. at home, and boys varsity ice hockey plays Lexington at 7:15 p.m. @ Lexington.

3. Anti-bullying day - Today is "Black Out Bullying" in Massachusetts. In honor of that, students in Wakefield are encouraged to wear a black shirt to school today. And tonight, join the Center for Education in Violence Prevention for "Conversations on Bullying," a free discussion (register online) for parents, teachers, school staff and community members about the realities of bullying in and out of schools. The event takes places at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeshore Learning on Route 1 in Saugus.

4. Early dismissal - Today is a half-day for students due to a teacher's professional day. Wakefield High School will be dismissed at 11 a.m., Galvin Middle School will be dismissed at 11:20 a.m., and the elementary schools will be dismissed at 11:55 a.m.

5. Chinese lanters - Since the kids will be out early today, consider sending your 5-8th graders to the Beebe Library, which will be hosting a Chinese New Year celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Students will be able to create Chinese lanterns and at 1:00 p.m., kids can make a winter scene with snowmen, snowballs, and pteredactyls in the Program Room. All middle schoolers are welcome, and no registration is required.
