Compliance Check Turns Up No Tobacco Violations

On February 2, two 16-year-olds in town paid a visit to the town's tobacco vendors.

The Wakefield Board of Health announced that all town retailers passed a tobacco compliance check carried out on Saturday, February 2.

According to the board of health, two 16-year-olds under the supervision of the tobacco control program coordinator visited all 23 tobacco vendors in Wakefield. Each time, the clerk behind the counter reportedly asked for identification and then refused to sell to the two teenagers.

“We appreciate that our local retailers not only comply with federal, state and local regulations but also understand the importance of helping to reduce youth access,” said the board of health, adding that many adult smokers start while they are still teenagers.

This is a strange check to me. I am not sure how I feel about these stores attempted to be tricked into selling to minors, but maybe there is no other way. Cudos to those who passed, great we are keeping this out of the hands of kids.
