Before Bombing, 10 Wakefielders Finished Boston Marathon

Terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon finish line brought race to an abrupt and tragic halt about 4:09 into the race. Twenty-one Wakefield residents were registered runners, 10 finished before marathon was stopped.

Before the 2013 Boston Marathon was cut short by a deadly terrorist attack Monday afternoon, ten registered Wakefield residents were able to finish the race – and all of the town’s 21 registered runners made it past the halfway mark.

The bombs exploded near the finish line just over four hours into the marathon, killing three and wounding at least 140.  The race was halted almost immediately afterward, diverting thousands of runners who were still making their way toward the finish.

At least one of the local runners ran to raise money for a nonprofit or other cause. Stacey Suntken, as noted on Wakefield Patch earlier this year, ran her sixth marathon to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and also the Ron Burton Training Village.
