Winchester Hospital Honors Grateful Patients
Standing in front of fellow patients, her family, physicians and nurses, Deb Catalano had the opportunity to thank her caregivers.
It was only eight months ago that the Winchester resident was diagnosed with lymphoma, requiring her to undergo 26 days of treatment at Winchester Hospital.
“The nurses, hospitalists, dieticians, physical therapists, medical aides, everyone that worked with me, they all exhibited such unselfish dedication day in and day out,” Catalano said. “They were the ones that encouraged me, strengthened me, made sure I did what I was supposed to do to get well, held my hand when I needed it, informed and educated me, and of course made me laugh and smile at all hours. To say I have the utmost respect and appreciation for them all is an understatement. It’s a time of my life that I’ll never forget and people that will be in my heart forever.”
Catalano was one of the over 90 people in attendance who were honored at the Winchester Hospital Grateful Patient luncheon on May 31.
The Grateful Patient Program provides an opportunity for patients to make a contribution to the hospital in honor of a physician, caregiver or staff member.
“My experience at Winchester Hospital has been outstanding,” said Medford resident and Grateful Patient, Eileen Shapiro. “It is really the people inside the building that make such a difference. The staff feels like my extended family and I look forward to seeing them every time I am here.”
The Grateful Patient program at Winchester Hospital has received more than 125 contributions since its inception in the spring of 2011. Nearly 100 patients have recognized over 70 of Winchester Hospital’s physicians and caregivers for their compassion, understanding and the exceptional care they have provided.
“My fighting spirit was supported all along by all those involved and though I don’t see these wonderful faces every week anymore, they remain in my mind and heart and I only hope they all know what a difference they have made in my life and how so very grateful I and my parents are for all they did for me both physically and emotionally. They are an inspiration to me,” Catalano said.
Recipients of grateful patient donations are recognized in a public forum by hospital leadership, receive a silver pin commemorating the honor and are invited to attend a lunch with the patients who honored them and Kevin Smith, president and CEO of Winchester Hospital.
“Each and every day we are inspired by the courage of our patients and there is nothing more meaningful to those of us who work at Winchester Hospital than to know that we are providing the best care possible to our patients,” Smith said. “The Grateful Patient program is so meaningful because it exemplifies the sacred bond between a patient and those who care for them.”
