Wakefield Summer Band Rehearsals Begin

  • May 30, 2012

The Wakefield Summer Band will begin rehearsals next Monday, June 4, for the first year of their second decade of providing summer lakeside concerts at the Common Bandstand. Rehearsals will be held most Mondays during the summer at First Parish Congregational Church, adjacent to the bandstand, from 7:30 – 9:00 PM. The first concert of the 2012 season is scheduled for Friday, July 6, with 3 more Friday night concerts in July and August TBA.

“The mission of this band since its inception has been to provide an opportunity for anyone from high school age and up to perform the standard band literature with their musical colleagues,” said Don Hodgkins, Founder/Director of WSB. “Membership is open without audition or fees to anyone interested in joining, as long as they can attend most of the rehearsals and concerts.”

“One of the most rewarding benefits of a group like this is that it gives an opportunity for inter-generational participation, with high-school age musicians playing side-by-side with senior musicians, and all the ages in between,” continues Hodgkins. “Everyone can learn from everyone else, and the result is usually a rewarding concert both for the participants and the audience.” Hodgkins especially wants to invite adults who perhaps haven’t had the chance to perform on their instrument since their college days, and high-schoolers who want to keep playing while the school band program is in summer recess. For those who play the larger brass or woodwind instruments but do not own one, arrangements can be made to borrow one for the summer.

For further information, or to sign up to join the band, please contact Hodgkins at Donhodg@aol.com as soon as possible. Hope to hear from you!
