  • May 15, 2011

SHAWS of Wakefield has partnered with the Greenwood School PTO!  Along with Pepsi and Frito Lay, Shaws is working together for our community.

Now through May 19th purchase participating products from Pepsi and Frito Lay and 1% of the total sales, up to $750, will be donated to the Greenwood School PTO!

No flyer needed – this applies to all qualifying sales.  Be sure to spread the word to neighbors and friends.

I understand the schools are in a tremendous budget shortfall, but feel there must be some other way to make money for the schools than to resort to partnering with corporations that are a major contributor to obesity, the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. (the first being tobacco use).

The same values about good nutrition that are promoted within the schools should be taught outside the classroom. If students are taught in health class to avoid soda, chips, etc. and then are asked to encourage their parents to purchase those products for a fundraiser, they are given a serious mixed message.

I commend the Greenwood PTO for taking action and doing what they can to bring needed funds to their school. I simply hope next time they will consider other means to do so, which would instead promote healthful values in the students.

    Sincerely,

    Sherri Carlson
